What is AI hybrid production?

Real people shot in a studio, with the location built around them. How it works, what it takes away, and when you should still shoot for real.

AI hybrid production is live-action filmmaking with the location built by AI. The people are real and the performance is shot for real, in a studio, on cinema cameras. The clifftop, the city street or the snowstorm around them is generated, then edited, graded and finished like any other film.

It is not an AI-generated ad. Nobody’s face is invented, and nobody’s likeness is made without their consent. Talent is cast, paid and credited as on any shoot.

How a hybrid job runs

  1. Storyboard. Every frame is specified up front: lens, camera move, action and timing.
  2. Blocking. Each shot is built in 3D clay first, so the camera move and timing are locked before anything is generated.
  3. Studio shoot. The performance is shot in our Melbourne studio, lit to match the world it will sit in.
  4. World build. The location is generated around the performance. Real faces stay real.
  5. Finish. Edit, comp, colour and sound, with one film look across every shot.

What it takes away

  • Weather holds. The sky is whatever the story needs.
  • Long-haul travel for cast and crew.
  • Permits, road closures and chasing the last hour of light.
  • Unsafe setups at height or in extreme places.

When to shoot it for real instead

Plenty is still best in camera, and we say so when it is. A product on a bench, an interview, a real place that matters to the story: shoot those for real. Hybrid earns its place when the location is out of reach, out of season, unsafe, or needs a camera move no rig could make.

See it in action

The full pipeline runs in-house, from clay blocking to finished shot. You can see it on our AI hybrid production page. If you have a shot that can’t be shot, talk to us.
